Proclaiming Christ in the Age of Obama
Dr. Burton was privileged to conduct a one
day evangelism seminar at the Croydon SDA
Church in London on February 7. The morning
sermon emphasized the need for members to
get more involved in making a difference in
the community. The afternoon workshop was
titled "Pass the Salt" and applied the
various uses of salt to witnessing
strategies. Each participant was empowered
to do his/her part in advancing the
practical message of the kingdom. Pray for
Pastor Kavolah and the ministerial team as
they do great things for the Lord in 2009.
So
Long Uncle Eric
Shortly after funeralizing his
father-in-law, Dr. Burton and his family
were assaulted by the cruel hand of death
once more when his only paternal uncle "gave
up the ghost." Eric Samuel Burton, Sr. was
born in May 1921, and had served as a
conscientious objector in the Royal Air
Force. He was also a founding director of
the Balham and Tooting Sports and Social
Club, and an effective community activist.
The funeral service was held on October 12
at the Brixton SDA Church in London. Dr.
Burton's homily was based on the poem "In
Flanders Fields" by Dr. John McCrae. He used
the poem to give voice to Uncle Eric as he
shared words of hope with the mourners.
Please keep the family in your prayers.
Oakwood University Faculty Forum
On October 14, Dr. Burton joined Dr. Ciro
Sepulveda, chair of the Oakwood University
History Department, as the two addressed
faculty and staff on different ways to
publish books. Dr. Burton shared his
experience with self publishing, academic
publishing, denominational publishing,
editorial publishing and second-tier
publishing. You can see a list of his books
at
www.keithaburton.com.
Black History in the Bay Area
Every year, Dr. Burton takes his Black
history program to the Bay Area in Northern
California. This year, he returned to Beacon
Light SDA Church and Magee Avenue Baptist
Church where he challenged the congregations
to be participants and not mere observers in
the making of Black history. He was also
able to attend service at the Allen Temple
Baptist Church where Dr. J. Alfred Smith
enjoys a month long transition to a well
deserved retirement. Please keep Pastors
Freddy Brown and Michael Smith in your
thoughts and prayers.

Death
of Dr. Burton's Father-in-Law
Jose Leopole Shelton was a distinguished man
of Cuban-Jamaican heritage. He entered this
life in 1921 and made his exit on January 7,
2009. He was well loved by his family, and
his death has left a void that is impossible
to fill. On January 18, 2009, final services
were held for him at the Maranatha SDA
Church in Miami, Florida. Dr. Burton
delivered the eulogy titled "The Meaning of
Life" from the book of Ecclesiastes. In this
philosophically therapeutic message, Jose's
survivors were reminded that life is only
futile if God is left out of the picture.
Please remember the family in your prayers.
Oakwood University Religion and Theology
Forum
Days after President Obama settled in his
new role as Chief Executive of the United
States of America, Dr. Burton addressed an
audience at the Religion and Theology Forum
at Oakwood University. Contributing to the
theme of "Kingdom Building," Dr. Burton
delivered the practical message, "Cain's
Question and Obama's Burden." He
demonstrated how Barack's social agenda
provides economic, societal, and moral
answers to Cain's piercing question, "Am I
My Brother's Keeper." Several individuals
responded to the call to be more active in
positive community building. Please pray for
Forum president, Michael Mickens, as he
allows the Spirit of God to drive his
agenda.
Human Sexuality at Oakwood University
On January 29, Dr. Burton presented his
annual sex lecture to the Human Sexuality at
Oakwood University. "Biblical Instructions
on Sex Management" provides insights into
biblical sexual ideals, and offers
strategies for coping with sexual
temptation. Please keep students on all
college campuses in your prayers.
REAL Bible Discussion
Dr. Burton's "REAL Bible Discussion" group
on Facebook has over 600 participants. If
you are on Facebook, be sure to sign

Spiritual Revival at Muswell Hill
Dr. Burton's final meeting for the year was
held at the Muswell Hill SDA Church from
November 29 to December 6. The meetings were
held at London's historic Archway Methodist
Church and focused on church renewal and
personal commitment. Special healing took
place during the inaugural presentation of
"When Hell Breaks Loose." In this
provocative yet soothing message, Job's
experience is analyzed through human,
demonic and Divine perspectives. Please
continue to pray for Pastor Mazlin Holness
and her congregation.
Annual Pastoral and Evangelism Conference
Every December, hundreds of pastors from the
United States, Africa, the Caribbean and
Europe descend on Oakwood University for
evangelistic equipping and renewal. Dr.
Burton assisted at the Bradford Cleveland
Brooks Leadership Center booth, which is the
cover organization for the 2000 Years of
Christianity in Africa study group. Many
attendees secured copies of Dr. Burton's
Blessing of Africa.

Better Living Seminars in Hampstead,
London
For the first three weeks of November, Dr.
Burton addressed audiences four nights a
week at the Hampstead SDA Church in North
London. The timely messages incorporated
prophetic insights into contemporary events
as attendees were encouraged to live out
their Christianity in practical ways.
Baptisms were held on two separate weeks,
and the Kingdom of God was increased! Please
remember the others who will be sealed in
the next baptism, and continue to pray for
Pastor Humphreys and his ministerial team.
Guest Speaker/Teacher at Thornton Heath
New Testament Assembly
Dr. Burton was privileged to fellowship as
worship speaker and Bible study teacher at
the New Testament Assembly in Thornton
Heath, London. After preaching on the
American presidency in light of Revelation 5
for Divine worship on November 2, Dr. Burton
was invited to teach a class on the United
States and prophecy on November 11. He dealt
with the theme, "The American Nightmare"
from Revelation 13. Rev. Calvin Burke and
the pastoral team were excellent
hosts--please lift them up in prayer.

Black History at Plumstead Community
Church
October is Black History month in the United
Kingdom and Dr. Burton was privileged to
conduct several educational seminars in the
land of his birth. The first was a weekend
at the Plumstead Community Church where
people from near and far gathered to learn
about the African presence in the Bible.
Please keep Pastor Essen and the
congregation in your prayers.
Black History Lectures at Newbold College
On October 14-16, Dr. Burton gave several
Black History presentations on the Newbold
College campus. On Tuesday morning, he
addressed the campus community at large with
the presentation "Guess Who's
Coming
to Dinner: Identifying Biblical Africans."
Tuesday evening's scheduled Diversity
Seminar featured Dr. Burton covering the
theme: "Africa's
Contribution to the Protestant Movement:
Papal Hegemony and the Battle for the
Sabbath in Ethiopia." According to the
official
Newbold College press release, "Ukranian
MA student Oleg Kostyuk said ‘Keith has
brought a new perception to my understanding
of African history. I
have been focused on European history and
have heard very little about Christianity
and Sabbath keeping on the African
continent.'"
Wednesday evening's gathering was more
informal as students and staff sat at a
grand table during a Caribbean chat and
chew, and picked Dr. Burton's brain about
issues of race and diversity. On Thursday
evening, Dr. Burton experienced The
Experience, a regular worship setting
where the Newbold community sing, share and
receive a word. He delivered the message
"The Faith Factor" as students were
encouraged to strive for their dreams.
Special thanks are directed to Professors
Gifford Rhamie and Valerie Bernard.

College Press Release.
More at Newbold with Ken Burton
A long anticipated dream was materialized on
October 17 when Dr. Burton and his brother
Ken presented "We've Come This Far by Faith"
to the broader Newbold college community.
Based on the first chapter of Dr. Burton's
book, The Faith Factor, the program
traced the history of African spirituality
from creation to the present day.
Ken
Burton is a renowned choral director,
workshop leader, composer and musician who
is a well established European celebrity.
The report on the
Newbold College web site includes the
following: "Finnish
MA student, Sirpa
Karstenberg said ‘I could feel both the
sadness and joy springing to the surface as
the two men gave their account of slavery
and freedom. It was beautifully captured
through the songs and presentation. Ken
captured the audience's emotions through the
story of Africa's history.'"
Black History Seminar in Tottenham
Pastor Augustus Lawrence and the Holcombe
Road SDA Church laid out the red carpet for
Dr. Burton as he took his Black History
program to the waiting congregation on
October 18. Eager to learn, audience members
asked penetrating questions as they gleaned
new facts about the role of Africa and
Africans in transmitting and preserving the
Christian message.
BBC Bristol and Premier Radio Interviews
Dr. Burton conducted two interviews on
The Blessing of Africa during Black
History Month in the UK. On October 13, he
was featured in a segment of the popular
Premier Radio show, "The Big Picture," with
host Bridgette Tetteh, who wrote that it was
a "great interview." He was back on the air
on October 19 with Trevor Fry, host
of BBC Bristol show, "Sunday Starts."

Sex and the City
The opposing values of Hollywood and the
Bible clashed on September 13 as Dr. Burton
conducted a family life seminar at the
Fayeteville Church in Fayette, Georgia. In
stark terms, he upheld the biblical
standards for sexual purity as he encouraged
families to talk openly about the sexual
sins the devil uses to tear families apart.
Oakwood University Music Department
Consecration Service
On September 16, students and faculty of the
Oakwood University Music Department
assembled for their annual consecration
service. Dr. Burton delivered the
consecratory address titled "I Write the
Songs," in which he addressed he power of
music and the spiritual responsibility of
Christian musicians. Please pray for Dr.
Chambers and the entire music department as
they do their best to bring glory to God
through their artistic gifts.
Purnell Vow Renewal Service
Love is still in the air for our dear
friends Franklin and Kathyanne Purnell who
celebrated a decade of marriage with a
special vow renewal in Chattanooga,
Tennessee. Dr. Burton was privileged to
preside over the ceremony, especially since
an overseas trip caused him to miss the
wedding ten years ago. May the Spirit of
Christ continue to mold these dear saints
and their three lovely children as they work
together to bring glory to His name.

Generation Impact in St. Lucia
Dr. Burton was privileged to be the featured
speaker at "Generation Impact," the first
annual National Youth Summit held the
beautiful island of St. Lucia. On Thursday
and Friday evenings, he spoke at the Labayee

with the messages "Iron Man" and "Baby
Mamma." On Saturday, the event moved south
to the George Odlum Stadium in Vieux Forte.
Thousands of attendees enthusiastically
received the messages "No Woman no Cry" and
"Get Up Stand Up." Over the course of the
summit, hundreds of youth made public
commitments to stand for Christ and be
agents of change in their communities.
Please continue to pray for youth leader,
Pastor Franklyn Bray, and the ministers and
youth of St. Lucia.
Goodbye Dr. Mulzac
Many of you have been praying for my friend
and brother, Dr. Kenneth Delinor Mulzac. On
July 23, he entered the sleep of death after
a prolonged battle with cancer. Dr. Mulzac
was a dedicated servant of God who was fully
prepared for the moment and now awaits the
call of Christ in the first resurrection. He
was funeralized on August 4 at the Pioneer
Memorial Church on the Andrews University
campus in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Dr.
Burton was pleased for the opportunity to
minister words of healing to Belynda,
Breanda and Karla and members of the family
when he joined Dr. James Doggette in
delivering the eulogy for this very
significant soldier of righteousness. Please
continue to pray for the family.
Dr. Burton on 3ABN
August 1 marked Dr. Burton's forty-fifth
year on planet earth. It was also the
commencement of a two day program that was
televised around the world on 3ABN which has
a potential viewing audience of
half-a-billion people! The program was the
first of the "C. E. Bradford Series" and was
titled Expanding the Prophetic Map: Global
Footprints of Adventism and the Sabbath.
Speakers included Drs. Charles Bradford,
Bertam Melbourne. Emory Tolbert, Joan
Francis, Douglas Morgan, Russel Staples,
Harold Lee and Lois Peters. Dr. Burton's
presentation was titled "The Family of God"
and addressed the common roots of the human
family.

Many decisions were made for Christ, and
souls were added to the kingdom of God.

Obama Watch at All Nations
On June 21, Dr. Burton addressed the All
Nations congregation in Huntsville, Alabama,
with the message "Yes He Did" based on
Revelation 5:1-5. He reminded the
congregation that while there may be a
desire to see a person of color in the White
House, we can't forget that the only change
we can really believe in comes from Jesus
Christ. Please continue to pray for Pastors
Holder and Vaughn and the members of All
Nations as they engage in powerful and
transformative ministry.

Is Wright Right? Discussion on WEUP
Talk
with David Person
On May 1, David Person, host of WEUP Talk in
Huntsville, Alabama, invited Dr. Burton to
join in a discussion about the Rev. Dr.
Jeremiah Wright, Senator Barack Obama's
former pastor. The relationship between the
two became further strained after Dr.
Wright's controversial interchange at the
National Press Club. The lively discussion
examined the role of the preacher/prophet
and the politician.
What is Black Liberation Theology?
Discussion on What's the 411
with Sharon Kaye
Media discussion about Rev. Wright continued
on May 4 when Dr. Burton was a guest on
WFSK's What's the 411 with Sharon
Kaye. He was joined by Dr. Lee June of
Michigan State University. Together, the two
were charged with "defining" the Black
Church and discussing issues pertaining to
Black Liberation Theology that the
mainstream media doesn't seem to understand.
Questions and comments from callers helped
to further stimulate discussion. Listen

Diplomat for the International Services
Council
Dr. Burton has officially--and
unexpectedly--been inducted into the
membership of the diplomatic core for the
International Services Council. His name was
presented by Dr. Edith Fraser, director of
faculty development at Oakwood University.
His first official assignment took place on
May 8, and involved playing host for a team
of religious and government leaders from
Nigeria, Cote D'Ivoire, Chad, Cameroon and
South Africa. They were guests of the United
States Department of State who had been
selected to participate in a religious
liberty fact finding mission. Together with
the team, Dr. Burton participated in
meetings at the Hartselle United Methodist
Church, the Hartselle mayor's office, and
the 16th Street Baptist Church in
Birmingham, Alabama.
Disney Here We Come!
On May 10-15, Dr. Burton served as a
chaperone for the Oakwood Adventist
Academy's eighth grade class trip to
Orlando, Florida. While attending to the
delightful group of young men who were under
his care, he managed to participate in
activities at Islands of Adventures, Wet and
Wild, and Disney Quest. Best of all, he had
a chance to bond further with his son
(without cramping his style!).
Congratulations to the Graduates
May 22-25 are days that will go down in
history in the Burton household. These days
marked major graduation ceremonies for our
two children. On the Thursday night, Kaleem
Augustus Burton graduated from the eighth
grade with highest honors and five
recognition cords accessorizing his robe.
After two days of preliminaries, Sheereen
Aiesha Burton marched down the aisle on
Sunday 25th. She too graduated with high
honors and also received the Premier
Academic Scholarship from Oakwood University
(our bank account says praise the Lord!).
The celebration was enhanced by a host of
friends and family including both sets of
grandparents from London and Atlanta, aunts
from San Antonio and Atlanta, and Sheereen's
god-mother from Seattle. Please continue to
pray for my precious children as they
transition to a new phase in their academic
careers.

Dedication of Andrae "Marcus" Garvey
On March 8, Dr. Burton and his family
traveled to Birmingham, Alabama to
participate in the dedication of Andrae
"Marcus" Garvey. Proud parents, Hosen and
Koren, were blessed with the presence of
family members from around the country and
overseas. Young Andrae is blessed with the
honor of being a relative of the late Black
liberationist, Marcus Mosiah Garvey. In the
dedicatory prayer, Dr. Burton reminded the
parents that Andrae has been destined for
greatness--not just because of his link to
Marcus Garvey, but because he is a child of
the Eternal Messiah.
Berean is Revived
Each night from April 4-19 (with the
exception of Thursday), Dr. Burton presented
sermons of revival to the members and
friends of the Berean SDA Church in
Brooklyn, New York, where Bruce Daughma is
senior pastor. The Spirit worked in
mysterious ways as Dr. Burton was impressed
to deliver messages that spoke directly to
the needs of the people. Based primarily on
the "Ordinary People" series, the topics
included fresh takes on Isaac (Muddled
Model), Joseph (Vengeful Victor), and Paul
(Testy Teacher). Dr. Burton has been asked
to follow up the revival with a full scale
evangelistic meeting in 2009. He is grateful
for the wonderful care and attention that
was showered on him by his hosts, Elder and
Mrs. Winston Samuel.
Mission Sunday at Progressive Union
Missionary Baptist Church
On April 26, Dr. Burton was pleased to
accept the invitation from Dr. Wayne
Snodgrass to address his congregation during
the Mission Sunday worship service. The
Progressive Union Missionary Baptist Church
recently moved into its new facilities, and
is committed to making a difference in
Huntsville, Alabama. As foreign missionaries
were celebrated, Dr. Burton reminded the
congregation that every member of the body
of Christ has been called to be a witness
wherever he or she may be. Please continue
to pray for the ministry of Progressive
Union.
